Feeding the Hungry Ghosts ceremony was held on October 26, a bright, breezy autumn day. We had a substantial group that day, and enjoyed tea and special food afterward on behalf of the beings for whom we did the ceremony.

We continued to reap harvests from our raised garden beds behind the temple. Beans, tomatoes, eggplant, zucchini and kale persisted through the fall. We also picked our first crop of persimmons from our young tree which was planted three years ago—about three dozen persimmons, which were delicious.

The festival of Buddha’s Enlightenment was held on December 7. We read the nine-part story of the Buddha’s life, with nine of those in attendance reading one part. We had tea and an hour of socializing following the ceremony.

Lay Ordination for Daniel Molina

Rev. Seikai gave the Buddhist Precepts to Daniel Molina on November 2; we welcomed Daniel into our Sangha family with joy and gratitude. It seemed fitting to hold the ceremony on November 2, as it fell between the death anniversaries of Keido Chisan Koho on November 1, and his disciple and our teacher, Houn Jiyu-Kennett on November 6. We paid tribute to them both during the lay ordination. Daniel has been a regular at Pine Mountain Temple over the course of this year, and his practice progressed to a place where becoming a lay Buddhist was a good step to take. We wish Dan the very best in his path in training.
